Distribution, composition and environmental correlates of high-altitude gravelly pavement herbfields in north-eastern Victoria, Australia

چکیده

Context Gravelly pavement herbfields are a rare, geographically restricted community found in high mountain areas of south-eastern Australia. plant communities occur where there is continuous waterflow, with vegetation comprising sparse, semi-aquatic species on rock or gravel substratum. Aims This study aimed to further the understanding Bogong High Plains, Victoria, by asking questions relating their location, structure and floristic composition. In particular, we ask what determines distribution at landscape-scale; abiotic factors govern between- within-site patterns? Results were associated groundwater outflows likely be formed an interaction between surface waterflow slope. work adds current wetland types high-mountain Australia because, our knowledge, this relationship has not been previously described. Floristic patterns vary slope elevation, high-elevation pavements steep slopes being floristically dissimilar those lower elevation flatter slopes. Species richness was consistent across sites only few abundance. Within-site patterning apparent most pavements, attributable such as rockiness water availability, leading characteristic patterns. sedge Oreobolus pumilio margins levels variable, whereas forbs Psychrophila introloba typically middle constant supply. Conclusions groundwater-dependant ecosystems, landscape-scale contain many rare and, such, deserve higher protection than currently offered.

Lizard diversity on a rainforest–savanna altitude gradient in north-eastern Australia

Mountain ecosystems act as natural experiments for investigating the relationship between environmental heterogeneity and species diversity. A review of the global altitudinal distribution of reptiles identified a diverse range of patterns driven by climate and taxonomy. No Australian examples were included in this analysis. We addressed this gap by surveying the reptile assemblage along an alt...

Reproductive Management of Beef Cattle in North Eastern Victoria

Beef producers in the Benalla district of north east Victoria rarely practice management strategies to maintain high fertility in their breeding herds. This is evidenced by the low level of reproductive performance in beef herds in the district (Sykes and Ada 1980). Trapnell and Ada (1981) found that beef producers do not consider fertility to be a problem in their herds. However, they found th...

Distribution and biomass of macrobenthic fauna in the Chabahar Bay (North Eastern Sea of Oman)

Population density, distribution and biomass of macrobenthic fauna in Chabahar Bay were investigated from May 1995 to March 1996 on a bimonthly basis. The most abundant groups were Amphipods (21%), Polychaetes (19%), Gastropods (15.7%) and Bivalves (10.6%). Maximum (13000 individuals/m2) and minimum (4600 individuals/m2) were observed in May and July respectively. The changes in density were in...

Elevational Distribution of Flightless Ground Beetles in the Tropical Rainforests of North-Eastern Australia

Understanding how the environment influences patterns of diversity is vital for effective conservation management, especially in a changing global climate. While assemblage structure and species richness patterns are often correlated with current environmental factors, historical influences may also be considerable, especially for taxa with poor dispersal abilities. Mountain-top regions through...
